Why I Wrote This Book
Over the course of my career in higher education — including work involving academic program approval, registration, and review processes within New York’s higher education system — I observed that many doctoral students struggled not because they lacked ability or commitment, but because they lacked context.
They often could not see where they were within the larger process, why certain challenges were emerging, or how their experiences related to the experiences of others moving through the doctoral journey.
The Finished Dissertation grew out of a desire to provide that context and perspective.
The goal was not to create another dissertation “how-to” guide. The goal was to help readers better understand the doctoral journey and the factors that influence progress from start to finish.
The Framework
