Clarity Perspective Strategy Finish

Not Sure About the Next Step in Your Doctoral Journey?

Understanding where you are on the doctoral journey can help you make informed decisions about your next steps. Many doctoral students reach a point where they are no longer certain what comes next.

When the Path Forward Isn’t Clear

Deciding to pursue a doctoral program, managing coursework, preparing for the dissertation, or trying to regain momentum can leave you uncertain about what comes next.

You may be facing important decisions, questioning expectations, trying to understand changing requirements, or wondering why progress feels more difficult than expected.

Often, the issue is not a lack of effort. What may be needed is an opportunity to step back, take stock, and gain a clearer understanding of where you are in your doctoral journey before deciding on your next move.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

Before deciding what comes next, you need to understand where you are and what is happening.

The Doctoral Decision & Strategy Session (DDSS) provides a structured opportunity to step back from the immediate challenges of doctoral work and look at the bigger picture.

During the session, you have an opportunity to:

  • Understand your current situation
  • Identify factors that may be slowing progress
  • Clarify expectations, decisions, and requirements
  • Recognize patterns that may not be obvious from inside the process
  • Decide what comes next

The aim is not merely to work harder. The aim is to understand the situation clearly enough to move forward with confidence and regain forward momentum.

Context and Perspective for the Dissertation Process

The DDSS is grounded in the framework presented in The Finished Dissertation. The framework provides context and perspective for understanding the dissertation process. It recognizes that doctoral work progresses through identifiable stages and that different challenges emerge at different points in the journey.

By helping students understand where they are within the larger process, the framework offers a broader view of the decisions, challenges, and opportunities that may influence progress.

About Dr. Jacqueline A. Kane

For many years, I worked with colleges and universities as they navigated complex academic approval, review, and registration processes.

That work required understanding where organizations stood, identifying what mattered most, and helping leaders determine appropriate next steps. Today, I apply the same interpretive approach to doctoral progress.

My work is centered on helping doctoral students understand their situation, gain perspective, and decide what comes next.

“Jacqueline is a systems and agile thinker with exceptional analytical skills. She possesses a keen ability to challenge and inspire.”
